The IAM is a national organisation founded in 1956 as a registered Charity to improve road safety and raise motorists' standards, which includes Car Drivers, Motorcycle Riders and Commercial Drivers. The first Motorcycle Test was taken in 1976.
The IAM is not owned by any commercial organisation and as such, is totally independent in its aims and objectives. In fact it is funded and supported by its Members who pay a small Membership Fee each year. Currently, there are in excess of 112,000 Members.

The IAM's Advanced Test is recognised and accredited by the Government's Driving Standards Agency. On successfully passing the Advanced Test, an individual is recommended for membership of the IAM.
The overall conduct of the IAM's Advanced Tests is the responsibility of its Chief Examiner. All IAM Advanced Test Examiners hold the highest Police Riding/Driving Qualifications and the majority of them are serving Police Officers that have years of experience in working within the Traffic Division.

The Police Foundation's Motorcycle Roadcraft (not included) should also be used in conjunction with the IAM's book to develop a greater understanding of The System.
As an IAM Member you will receive the IAM's Advanced Driving magazine which is distributed free-of-charge 3 times a year and contains items on all aspects of motoring, news releases and other information from the IAM, changes in the law, new products, test reports and special offers which have been negotiated by the IAM on a wide range of products and services.
